Background:
Salam/hey guys! Today I am reviewing Saffron Kabab House, an Afghan restaurant on Hillcroft Street. Saffron Kabab House is located in the same floor as Paradise Biryani Pointe. In fact, only one store separates these two establishments. I had just completed a tour of the Chevron Phillips Chemical Plant in Pasadena, and I was hungry. One constraint was the time. It was near Friday Prayers when I had decided to eat. From Pasadena to here, there was nothing but fast food junk. This was the main choice because it was near to a mosque. I also chose this because I wanted to try Afghan food and see how it compared to the other cuisines that I have tried in my life.

Let The Experience Begin!
Inside of Saffron Kabab House were tables, and a traditional sitting area. The sitting area resembled the ones that were popular in Saudi Arabia. There was also Afghan music playing throughout the restaurant. The waitress noticed my and asked me where I wanted to sit. I decided to sit in the traditional area. There was a TV that was showing a really boring TV court show where two people were having a shouting match. After I sat down, the waitress handed me the menu. After looking at the menu, I decided to place my order.

Let's Eat!
I ordered Quabili Pulao, which is considered to be Afghanistan's national dish. Quaboli Pulao is a rice dish that contains lamb shank, julienne carrots, and sauteed raisins. To drink, I got a nice glass of water. The pulao also came with free salad. I paid a total of $11.90 (tax included) . The waiting time was around 7 minutes and 30 seconds, perfect as I was in a rush to go to Friday Prayers.

The verdict:
The food tasted great! The lamb shank was very tender and tasty! The rice was also tasty. The carrots and the sauteed raisins were perfect for the pulao. The shank was much better than what I had at Fadi's. The salad was also delightful. All the vegetables were fresh and there was adequate amount of dressing in the salad. My only criticism of the food is that the rice could be less oily. If it is less oily, then there would be less mess when the person is eating. The food was washed down with a refreshing glass of water. Overall, two thumbs up.

Conclusion:
Would I recommend this restaurant? Yes. I strongly suggest you try this dish out. But be careful of the oil. Nevertheless, the service was good and punctual. You can even come here for lunch break from your work, considering that most companies give one hour off for lunch. I will definitely be coming back myself and trying the other things in the restaurant.

  1. My co-workers and I go there often. The food is from Afhan Cuisine in Sugarland. They are brothers. The mantoo and lamb shank curry are perfection.
