DaddyO's Pizza: When an Appetizer is Filling and Legit

Restaurant: DaddyO's Pizza
Address: 2645 N Gessner Road, Houston, TX
Buffet or a-la-carte: A-la-carte
Date of latest visit: 2/16/19

Background:
Salam/hey guys! Today I will be talking about a spot that has been around for nearly 25 years, and just started offering a halal option. The place in question is called DaddyO's Pizza. I actually heard about this place after seeing pictures on social media about the food they have. It looks appetizing, but as I have learned, it's best to see how the food is really presented, looks, and tastes. There have been some instances where the food comes in a reasonably sized bowl, but in reality it would come in something very small. One thing that caught my eye was the garlic cheese rolls that were shown. I wanted to try it, but I wasn't going to post about it initially since they didn't have halal options. But, I got a DM from them, and they said that they plan on offering a halal gyro topping for their pizzas, salad, wraps. Since I saw pictures of the rolls with pepperoni, I thought that it would be ok to have the gyro meat in them. I got to go while I was on a break from my PE (Principles of Engineering) exam prep class at their Spring Branch location (They also have a location on Dairy Ashford).

Let The Experience Begin!
The Spring Branch location of DaddyO's is located on N Gessner between Kempwood and Westray. The inside is small, similar to Crespo's. They also have seating outside.

Let's Eat!
I got the garlic cheese rolls with the gyro meat. For that, request the build your own and then add the gyro meat. The price is $11.90 (tax included). The wait time wasn't bad at approximately 8 minutes.

Menu: https://slicelife.com/restaurants/tx/houston/77080/daddyo-s-pizza/menu?clientId=272335213.1550966280&segment_id=ab402ce2-80ca-412e-ac5b-6140ad256aba
This spot has pizzas, calzones, pastas, and subs, which are typical for most pizza places in town. They also have baklava as a dessert option.

What the rolls look like

My attempt at a cheese pull

The Verdict:
My goodness. The rolls were PHENOMENAL. It was incredibly flavorful, and the gyro meat was cooked perfectly. I also liked the bread. Easily one of the best appetizers I've had at a restaurant. The portions are big, so I would recommend you getting this with someone (I didn't eat the whole thing myself). No complaints about the service.

Conclusion:
DaddyO's is a place that's worth checking out. The garlic cheese rolls are something that is unique for a pizza place here in Houston. I will come back and try the pizzas, and I'd recommend you guys to check the place out if you're in the Energy Corridor or Spring Branch.

Earl's Kitchen and Bar: A More Affordable Halal Steakhouse

Restaurant: Earl's Kitchen and Bar
Address: 1538 N Clyborn Avenue, Chicago, IL
Buffet or a-la-carte: A-la-carte
Date of visit: 11/23/18

Background:
Salam/hey guys! Today I will be talking about my experience at a place where you can get halal steak in Chicago. The place is called Earl's. Earl's is a steakhouse chain that is based in Canada. I first heard about Earl's after seeing someone post about how they use Creekstone Farms beef (100% halal btw) at their restaurants. It turns out that they use Creekstone Farms beef at their US locations (I don't know about Canada locations). I looked up hoping that there would be a location in Houston, but there's one in Plano, near Dallas. Hopefully they'll expand to Houston in the future.
Originally, I was not supposed to go here. When I was planning my trip, I did polls for a few days leading up to the trip to determine which places I would try when I spend the day in downtown Chicago on the 23rd. I was originally going to Epic Burger and Tahoora, but that was for if I was going myself. I was in fact spending the day with my cousin from Cleveland. His favorite food item is steak, and he isn't a burger fan. So I thought of going to Prime and Provisions in downtown, but for some reason they were not open for lunch since it was Black Friday. I looked on Yelp and zabihah.com for places that had halal steak. I then saw that they had an Earl's in Chicago, so I reserved a table for two. After Friday prayers in downtown, we took an Uber to the restaurant .

Let The Experience Begin!
While the address mentions N Clyborn Avenue, the actual entrance is located on the northeast side of a roundabout that is to the right of the intersection of N Halsted Street and W Blackhawk Street. After confirming the reservation that I made, we were helped to the table by the friendly host. After taking a few minutes to read the menu, I was ready to order.

Let's Eat!
I decided to be adventurous and order the beef bibimbap. Bibimbap is a Korean dish that consists of rice, sesame chili sauce, carrots, mushrooms, zucchini, and a soft boiled egg served in a hot stone bowl. I ordered it because I never had a proper Korean dish in Houston (Coreanos is a fusion of Mexican and Korean; Bento Hut in Atlanta, which had chicken bulgogi, closed down), and that there's no halal Korean BBQ spot (though it's the highest in demand after BBQ and steakhouse). I am also confident that this location uses the Creekstone beef since there is no mention of any other beef supplier in their menu. The price was $17 + tax. My cousin got the 6 oz steak frites. It's a 6 oz sirloin steak that comes with fries and garlic bread. I decided to teach him the finer points of steak eating by making him order it medium rare. The price? $17.50 + tax. To wait, I watched UH get their butts kicked by Memphis.

Menu: https://earls.ca/locations/lincoln-park/menu/kitchen
The menu of Earl's is one of huge variety. At one end you have Asian food items like the bibimbap. At another end, you have pizzas, and at one end, you have steaks. As mentioned, Earl's uses Creekstone beef for its US locations. But this location also uses halal chicken from Crescent. I found out a few days after the actual trip there. I don't know if they also use the halal chicken at the other locations. When ordering, just mention to them that you want it cooked separately and that the grill would be cleaned, and they would be happy to help.

Now in order to eat the bibimbap, read through the captions underneath each picture.

Step 1: This is how the dish comes. The red stuff on the left is the sesame chili sauce.

Step 2: pour the sesame chili sauce into the bowl

Step 3: Mix it. This is what the result should be like. Do not eat before mixing.

The Verdict:
For someone who's having a proper Korean dish for the first time ever, I thought the food was good. The spice level was adequate, and the food quality was high. My cousin really enjoyed his steak frites. He said that the steak had a lot of flavor.
The service was wonderful. The folks there are really friendly and really accommodating. They always had a smile on their face when talking with customers.

Conclusion:
Earl's is a good spot to try if you want halal steak and/or Asian fare in Chicago without having to pay a lot at places like Prime and Provisions or Roka Akor (Chicago locations only have halal and not the Houston location 😒). The really friendly folks will definitely take care of you. I'll head to their Plano location, hopefully during my next trip to Dallas, and try their steak.

Fuzzy's: Halal Deep Dish Returns to Houston

Restaurant: Fuzzy's Pizza
Address: 8914 Westheimer Road, Houston, TX
Buffet or a-la-carte: a-la-carte
Date of visit: 2/19/18

Background:
Salam/hey guys! Today I will be writing about a spot that has been around for a while: Fuzzy's Pizza. I am going to keep this one short, since it was a spontaneous trip planned by me and my friend. I found out about this place using halal on Facebook. I messaged them, as well as called them, and they said yes to having halal toppings. I decided to go there after finishing my work at Prairie View.

Let's The Experience Begin!
Fuzzy's is located on Westheimer just before Fondren. There were tables, as well as pictures of the owner with many famous customers. For the most part, we were the only customers.

Let's Eat!
We ordered the deep dish pizza with beef pepperoni. We split the check

Menu: https://www.myfuzzyspizza.com/
The halal items that are available in this restaurant are the beef pepperoni, and chicken wings. They have regular, Chicago style, gluten free style, and Italian style (similar to Neapolitan pizza). They also serve pizza by the slice

The Deep Dish Pizza

The Verdict:
The food was pretty good. The only issue really was that the pepperoni was too thin. Nvertheless, halal deep dish is back.

Conclusion:
The absence of halal deep dish in the Houston area was a short one. Fuzzy's is not bad of a place to try. What you should do though is call ahead in advance, because deep dish takes around 40-50 minutes to cook!

Deen's Cheesesteak

Restaurant: Deen's Cheesesteaks
Address: 5222 Barker Cypress (Barker Cypress and Keith Harrow), Houston, TX
Buffet or a-la-carte: a-la-carte
Date of visit: 1/23/18

Update 10/18/18: This place has become a family favorite of mine. My new favorite item here is their chicken tikka cheesesteak. It's right now my favorite chicken cheesesteak in town! They put chicken tikka, onions, bell peppers, and their white sauce in their cheesesteak. Go give it a try!

Background:
Salam/hey guys! Today I will be writing about two experiences that I had at a new spot for halal American fare: Deen's. After seeing on Facebook about their opening, I had to give them a try. It is really nice to see another option for halal American food near the mosque that's near my house. For many years that I had been going to that mosque, there was one place that dominated it all: Khan BBQ and Grill 😒. Khan BBQ was something that literally everyone who goes to that mosque obsessed over. 9/10 times will they cater to the mosque for events that happen. I really hope this can be a good alternative for me.

Let's Eat!
Deen's is located on the intersection of Barker Cypress and Keith Harrow. Inside is really nice. They also have frozen yogurt, and get this, VIDEO GAMES. You can literally play games on PS4 or XBOX One while waiting for your food! They have games such as Need For Speed and Fifa! I've come here on four occasions, and I have tried a variety of foods. The first trip consisted of their authentic cheesesteak (ribeye, sauteed onions, and real cheese whiz) and fries. The second trip consisted of their American cheesesteak (ribeye, sauteed onions, bell peppers, and American cheese), fries, white garlic wings, and honey BBQ wings. The third trip consisted of what they call the Texas Cheesesteak. It's basically a fusion of Philly and Texas (No, not the Cowboys and Eagles bonding together lol). It's ribeye, onion strings, and American cheese drizzled with BBQ sauce. The final trip consisting of a cheesesteak that combined the Indian subcontinent and SE Pennsylvania: the tandoori chicken cheesesteak. It was tandoori chicken, onions, bell peppers, and American cheese drizzled with white sauce. The white sauce was what the owner recommended doing, so I had to go for it. While waiting, I played some games.

Menu: https://deenshouston.com/
Not only do they offer a variety of cheesesteaks and wings. They have calzones, pizza, and even frozen yogurt! Really promising items.

Clockwise from top left: White garlic wings, honey BBQ wings, Deen's Cheesesteak, and Fries

Authentic Cheesesteak: Just like Pat's

Texas Cheesesteak

Tandoori Chicken Cheesesteak

The Verdict:
Great food, I mean a wonderful addition to the food scene here. And it was something that was desperately needed in the area. Out of all the items I've tried, the standout was the tandoori cheesesteak. Nevertheless, the quality was consistently high for all the dishes.

Conclusion:
For the Cypress and Katy, Deen's is a great addition to the halal food scene. It's a place to try Philly chessesteaks, both original and innovative, if you don't want to drive to Hillcroft. I definitely see myself coming back here more often!

Rehla Foods: Great Filling Meals for a Very Affordable Price

Restaurant: Rehla Foods
Address: 4901 Rose Street, Houston, Texas
Buffet or a-la-carte: none
Date of visit: 7/3/17

Backround:
Salam/hey guys! Today I will be talking about a place called Rehla Foods. So what is Rehla Foods? Rehla Foods is more of a pop up place rather than a restaurant. The reason? They are inside another restaurant (The Twisted Palate) and they are open for only three days per week. All that is set to change in a few weeks as they will shift to a new place. But for now, we are just going to write about the past experience. I first heard about the place after I received an email from the owner about trying the place after they opened last year. I never got to try because of school, where I had classes on all days that it was open, and it was a lengthy drive from my old workplace. That all changed when I realized that it was only 10 minutes from my new workplace. After clocking out for lunch, I went there.

Let The Experience Begin!
The Twisted Palate is located on Rose and Durham in the Heights. Nothing much to explain, except the fact that I ordered over the phone. When I got to the place, there were other cars waiting for their food. I just waited until an employee came to my car with the food.

Let's Eat!
I ordered a single cheeseburger for myself and a boneless chicken biryani to share with my boss, since he's a big biryani fan. The cheeseburger had the basic meat, cheese, and vegetables on a challah bun. The sauces came on the side rather than inside the burger (for a good reason). The biryani was Lahori style, meaning that it is biryani that is popular in the Pakistani city of Lahore (considered to be Pakistan's food capital) I paid a total of $11.24 for that. Wow. Incredibly affordable. In many other places, the price would be at least $20.
A very important thing to note is that this is not a dine in place. They only do delivery or takeout as of right now.

Menu: http://www.rehlafoods.com/our-food
Individually, the burger was $5.69 and the biryani was $4.69. This is by far the cheapest biryani I've had in a while actually. They have a diverse selection of food. They hope to add the spaghetti soon.

Le Burger

Le Biryani

The Verdict:
Both food items looked tasty and fresh. Both had big portions as well. Regarding the burger, it was decent, but certainly not the best. There could've been more flavor in the burger. No need to worry about the seeds on the bun; they''re black sesame seeds! The biryani was completely different, It was actually excellent! Without a doubt the second biryani I have had that I actually liked. And at $4.69+ tax, it was a great value. The service was ok. Nothing to complain about.

Conclusion:
I cannot wait to go to their new location and get their biryani again, but for burgers, I'd just stick to my top spots in town. If you want to have some really good biryani in the Heights, then you should check this place out! They even deliver as well!

Pepperoni's- Yes, That's The Actual Name of the Restaurant AND They Have Halal Options as Well

Restaurant: Pepperoni's
Address: 8502 South Main Street, Houston, Texas
Buffet or a-la-carte: a-la-carte
Date of Visit: 4/8/17

Background:
Salam/hey guys! Finals are over, so this means I am back! I was so busy with school that this is the only review from April that I am writing. Today I will be writing about a new pizza place that has halal options. The name? Pepperoni's. Don't think for a second that they only serve Pepperoni pizza. They have a huge variety as well. I first heard of this only a few days ago at the Menu of Menus event that was hosted by the Houston Press (It was a great event with a lot of good halal/seafood/vegetarian foods). I had their cheese pizza there and it was fantastic. They gave out free 8" pizza coupons to every person who came to their booth at the event. They have locations all over town. I took one and made the intention of going to their Montrose location and getting their cheese pizza again (they have locations in Montrose, Medical Center, Katy, and Fort Bend County). Next thing you know, I get a tip from one of my followers on Instagram that they have started having halal beef toppings at their Medical Center location! Immediately the next day, I was able to go and give it a try!

Let The Experience Begin!
The location that I went to was the Medical Center one. It is located at the intersection of South Main and Braesman. Next to the door is the entire menu. Impressive. Inside, it was small, but it had the usual tables with the cashier area as well as a TV. On the wall, there was a sign that said "Halal Beef Now Available on Request".

Let's Eat!
Without any hesitation, I ordered an 8" pizza with halal beef, and used my coupon. The waiting time wasn't that bad.

Menu: https://static1.squarespace.com/static/555e06e2e4b0f085e3d3d1ea/t/5866aace9de4bbfbbf62837c/1483123414915/Montrose16.pdf

This is the menu for both the Medical Center and Montrose locations. I didn't post the menu for Fort Bend county and Katy because ONLY the Medical Center location has halal beef as of right now. My pizza would have costed $7.57 (tax included).

The 8" Halal Beef Pizza

Halal Beef Sign

The Verdict:
While this had lesser halal options than Russo's a few miles away, the pizza here was impressive. It was piping hot and fresh when it came to the table. The taste was also really good. It was far better than the pizza chains and some of the pizzas that I have had in my life. Overall, the place did a great job. No complaints about the service. The people were really nice and gave me no issues.

Conclusion:
Pepperoni's managed to impress me twice in a week. I definitely see myself coming here again on a regular basis if I want to eat a whole pizza myself without having to order a medium and literally stuff my face. The food comes fresh and hot, and there are no issues in the service. I hope that in the future there will be more halal toppings to choose from.

Jerusalem Bakery and Grill: Mediterranean Food in the Peach State

Restaurant: Jerusalem Bakery and Grill
Address: 585 Franklin Gateway SE, Marietta, Georgia
Buffet or a-la-carte: A-la-carte
Date of visit: 8/27/16

Background:
Salam/hey guys! Welcome to my latest review! Today I will be talking about my first experience in the city of Atlanta. Atlanta has a significant number of halal places, but they're mainly in the north and northeast side of town, (Fulton, DeKalb, and Gwinnet counties). Cobb county, where Marietta is located, doesn't have as many. I was honestly shocked since I always thought that Cobb county was the second significant county in the Atlanta area after Fulton. One of the places that I actually got to go to was called Jerusalem Bakery and Grill. This was a last minute decision since there were over 15 family members and we had to drive all the way from Masjid Farooq in downtown Atlanta just to go there. We also decided to go here because it was near the hotel that we were staying at (Hilton Marietta Conference Center). After the nikkah was done, we went there.
Keep in mind that this is different than the Jerusalem Bakery and Restaurant in Alpharetta.

Let The Experience Begin!
To get to the place, you have to get onto South Marietta Parkway SE from I-75, thentake a left onto Franklin Gateway SE and then get into the strip mall. Attached to the restaurant was a bakery, where you could buy them for your house. We all got chairs and sat down. My uncle asked what we wanted and were ready to go.

Let's Eat!
Most ordered the chicken shawarma sandwich, falafel, or the philly cheesesteak. I ordered the shawarma plate. I did this after asking what was popular and the response was "Everything". We all got Mexican glass bottle sodas. Most got Coke, including myself, and some got Sprite and Fanta. As soon as the food is ready, it is delivered to the other side of the restaurant, where someone calls out the order. While waiting, I watched them prepare the food and talked to my cousins.

Menu: http://jerusalem-bakery.com/restaurant/
Not only do they have Mediterranean food, they also have pizzas, calzones, and strombolis. The pricing is pretty good.

The shawarma plate. I got the chicken

The Verdict:
One thing that particularly surprised me was that they didn't give the garlic sauce or hot sauce when you get the place. You have to go to the counter and ask for them. Then, you pour some over the plate and eat. Anyways, the food was on point. My family loved their food and were raving about it. They also gave me props for telling about this place.
The service had no issues. Just got the food, enjoyed it, thanked them, and left.

Conclusion:
If you want to have some halal food in Marietta, then I would recommend this place. It's also very filling. A good start to this Atlanta trip.

Staccato's: Great, But Still Couldn't Topple the Best

Restaurant: Staccato's
Address: 11300 Beechnut Street, Houston, Texas 77072
Buffet or a-la-carte: A-la-carte
Date of visit:7/28/16

Background:
Salam/hey guys! Welcome to my latest review! Today I will be writing about my experience at another place where you can get halal burgers, Philly cheesesteak, and pizza. This place is called Stacatto's. I first heard about this place from someone who posted about the restaurant on Facebook. I saw the menu and I thought it would be worth trying out. A few months later, someone who knows me personally told me that the Philly cheesesteak he had was better than Busy Boy. That really got me interested in trying the place out. For many years, Busy Boy has been my personal favorite spot for Philly Cheesesteak in Houston. Last year, I said that Sayad took the spot for the best Mediterranean restaurant in Houston that I have had so far. Will the Philly cheesesteak at Stacatto's be good enough to topple Busy Boy? Let's get this going!
My chance to try it came when I finished work early. It was on the way home, and I had not eaten anything that day. So I decided to drop by and give it a try.

Let The Experience Begin!
Stacatto's is located where King's Chicken used to be for many years. I was one of only a few people inside the restaurant at that time. The restroom was out of order. The owner greeted me, and without any hesitation, gave my order.

Let's Eat!
I gave a huge hint on what I ordered in the "Background" section, but I'll say it here in case anyone doesn't understand what I said. I ordered the Philly cheesesteak. It came with fries. The owner asked me whether I wanted it spicy or regular. I went with regular, which is what I get 99.9% of the time when I go to Busy Boy and eat their cheesesteak. I paid $8.65 (tax included) for it. The waiting time was 14 minutes and 5 seconds. To wait, I browsed the internet on my phone.

Menu: http://www.beyondmenu.com/36606/houston/stacatto-s-houston-77072.aspx#group_1318660
Now what's weird is that on their actual website, the menu is on a Word document. It would be better if it was either on PDF or the website itself. Anyways, not only do they have subs, they also have burgers, Mediterranean food, pasta, pizza, and fried chicken. Nice diverse options in one roof.

The Philly Cheesesteak

The Verdict:
Overall, the food was great. The fries were perfectly crispy, and the cheesesteak was also good. However, the cheesesteak was not good enough to topple Busy Boy's for the title of best halal cheesesteak. I felt that there was something missing from this cheesesteak. I also didn't like how the beef was garnished with what I am assuming to be black peppers.

Conclusion:
Stacatto's may have fallen short of Busy Boy, but it was good enough for me to give this place another try. A lot of their food items look really delicious

Pizza 101: The Best Halal Desi Pizza in Town

Restaurant: Pizza 101
Address: 15215 Southwest Freeway, Sugar Land, Texas
Buffet or a-la-carte: A-la-carte
Date of visit: 5/28/16

Background:
Salam/hey guys! I hope everyone is having a great Ramadan! Today I will be writing about one of the newest halal pizza places in town: Pizza 101. I first heard about it on Facebook when the owner announced that the restaurant will be opening in Sugar Land. I was really excited to see another halal pizza place opening up in Sugar Land, and wondered how it will compare to U.B.'s. Thing is though, that this turned out it will have both Desi pizzas (i.e. kabab pizza, chicken tikka pizza, etc.) and regular pizzas. So it wouldn't be fair to compare them to a place that has Arab pizzas. Some people actually got to try it, including one of my good friends. She was a really big fan of it. Everyone who tried it got the Desi style pizzas, and they said they loved it. Those same people said that it was the best halal pizza in town, but I took that with a pinch of salt. This is because you cannot compare Desi style pizza to regular pizzas you get at Home Base, Crespo, or Russo's. Just to let you know, regular pizzas = meat lovers, supreme, beef pepperoni, etc. You cannot expect the regular style pizzas to have the same amount of spices as the Desi style pizzas. And I say this because I have had Desi style pizza before in my pre-blogging days. Anyways, the time came for me to try Pizza 101 after I attended a nikkah (declaration of legal contract between bride and groom in an Islamic marriage). I was really hungry, and was in the mood of a major cheat meal. So I thought "why not try this place since it just opened up". After the ceremony was over, I headed to the restaurant.

Let The Experience Begin!
Pizza 101 is located way at the back of the strip mall complex on 59 and Williams Trace (same complex as Aling's). In fact, you have to turn onto Williams Trace just to get there. Next to it is a Marble Slab. Inside, there was a TV playing and the interior looked really ice. There were facts about pizza on one side of the wall, There were two TVs above the cashier showing the menu. After waiting, I was ready to order.

Let's Eat!
I was originally going to do the build your own, but it ends up that they charge for every ingredient added. This was not mentioned on the menu and I was pretty disappointed. It's not right to rip people off like this, especially those who are on a budget. What Blaze Pizza and MOD Pizza are doing by allowing you to put unlimited toppings for one price is becoming increasingly popular, and we need more than one halal pizza place to do so. I asked them what their popular pizzas were, and they said the kabab madness and the chicken tikka pizza. So I went with a small kabab madness. The kabab madness pizza consists of  Problem was, they didn't have the small crust, so I had gotten a medium pizza. I really didn't get the logic. How can you say that you only have medium or large if they require more dough than a small?? Yes, it may be your soft opening, but you should still be able to make some more dough if one were to order a small and take a lot away from the medium or large pizzas. Thankfully, they let me pay for the medium for the same price of a small.

Menu: Pizza 101 has regular style pizzas along with two Desi style pizzas: the chicken tikka and the kabab madness. They have pasta as well. The drinks are priced pretty high in my opinion. I got the menu from their Yelp page because their website didn't mention the pizza prices for some reason.

Kabab Madness

The Verdict:
Despite the issues in the menu pricing and the unavailability of the small size, the pizza was phenomenal. The kabab in the pizza was out of this world! Everything else was full of flavor adn was really tasty. The dough was not too thick. Two thumbs up for the pizza.

Conclusion:
Pizza 101 definitely has a chance of beating out Crespo and Home Base Pizza in the title of best halal pizza in Houston. I hope they add the menu prices for the extra toppings in the build your own pizzas. I'll definitely come back and try the other pizzas that they offer.

Napoli Express Pizza - A pizza place with some halal Italian dishes

Restaurant: Napoli Express Pizza
Address: 10145 South Highway 6, Sugar Land, Texas
Buffet or a-la-carte: A-la-carte
Date of visit: 3/17/16

Background:
Salam/hey guys! Welcome to my latest review. Today I will be reviewing yet another Italian restaurant: Napoli Express Pizza. Napoli Express Pizza is located in the parking lot of a Chevron Gas Station at the intersection of Highway 6 and Old Richmond Road. I was in Sugar Land as I was participating in making the short film with my friends for the MSA Showdown competition that is taking place in Arlington this coming weekend (not going sadly). We had taken a little break after we had spent the day filming and acting. So we decided to come here at the recommendation of our friend. It was also convenient because it was only 10 minutes from his house. So after we edited the scene, we went to the restaurant.

Let The Experience Begin
There were plenty of tables to eat inside. We got a table next to the door. The ambiance was nice and bright. The menu was there for us to see. After reading the menu, we were ready to order.

Let's Eat!
My friend ordered the beef lasagna, and I ordered the cheese ravioli with the halal meat sauce. Both came with free salad and garlic breadTo drink, my friend has a Sprite and I had a Pepsi. I paid between $11 and $12 (tax included). The waiting time for the lasagna was at 13 minutes, while my ravioli took more than double the time. The official time was 27 minutes and 3 seconds. This beats Darband as the place that I have endured the longest wait for my food. The funny thing is that it's even longer than the time it takes for Saravanaa Bhavan to give my food after the rest of my family gets it. I talked to my friend at the table and tried contacting my other friend to meet us at the restaurant so that we could go and finish the final scene.

Menu: http://www.napoliexpresspizza.com/menu.html
They have a separate halal menu. The great part is that the halal menu availability is very similar to the availability at Russo's on Kirby. You must mention halal at the counter. And when ordering pasta, make sure you tell them to not put alcohol in the pasta just to be safe. If you want, you can ask them to put marinara sauce or the meat sauce. They don't, however, have pizza by the slice.

Clockwise from top right: Cheese Ravioli with Meat Sauce, Lasagna, Garlic Bread, and House Salad

The Verdict:
The ravioli was tasty, and so was the sample of the lasagna that I had. Both my friend and I really liked the food that we had ordered. The meat sauce had a lot of flavor and the texture was perfect. The ravioli was fresh and the cheese inside it was so good. The only blemish was the salad, which was just ok. Overall, two thumbs up for the main courses and one side thumb for the salad.
The service was good. The lady at the counter was really nice. She had apologized for the delay in my food coming out.

Conclusion:
Want a place that has a variety of halal pastas? Then this is your best bet if you live in Sugar Land or anywhere west of the Tollway. This is big as most of the halal Italian places have a limited number of halal pastas available. And most importantly, the food tastes good. In my next trip, I will try the pizza that they have to offer.

Tony's New York Pizzeria: A Halal Pizza Place in the North Side

Restaurant: Tony's New York Pizzeria
Address: 9203 Louetta Road, Spring, Texas 77379
Buffet or a-la-carte: a-la-carte
Date of visit: 3/9/16

Background:
Salam/hey guys, and welcome to my latest review! I had been busy earlier because I had my midterm exams. So the review is of a pizzeria that sells NY Style called Tony's. I've actually heard a lot of good things about that place from my friends and other foodies. I also wanted to go here because it's one of the few pizza places that serve by the slice. My chance to go here came when I had to go to Spring for some work. I had enough time until I had to be there, so I decided to come here for lunch and see whether the food lives up to what the people have said. After the really long drive from Prairie View on FM 2920 as well as Louetta, I arrived at the place.

Let the Experience Begin!
Tony's is located at the Valero gas station at the intersection of Louetta and Colony Creek Drive. Inside, the tables had checker boards, so if you want, you could play checkers. There was also an air hockey table. There were people in front of me when I arrived at the place. After waiting, it was my turn to order.

Let's Eat!
My first inclination was to get the buffet, but the pizza there wasn't halal. So I asked which ones were halal and he had explained it to me. So I ended up getting the lunch special consisting of a Philly Cheesesteak pizza with Caesar salad. I paid over $6 (tax included). The waiting time was 5 minutes and 37 seconds.

Menu: http://www.tonysnypizzahouston.com/#!menu/cwld
The menu here is pretty extensive. They have Sicilian style pizza and even pizza by the slice. They also have a couple of pastas and baked items as well. Remember, when ordering halal, you must request them when ordering. The items are priced at decent amounts. The halal options are: wings, chicken, meatballs, and their Philly Cheesesteak pizza.

Philly Cheesesteak Pizza and Caesar Salad

The Verdict:
The salad was very fresh. It went well with the ranch that came with it. The pizza, however, was average. The entire slice, from the cheese to the meats to the vegetables, tasted ok, nowhere near it's competitors. It was also very oily, one of the most oiliest pizzas that I have eaten. The food was washed down with water. Overall, one thumb up for the salad, and one side thumb for the pizza.
The service was good. The person was nice and told me the halal items that were available.

Conclusion:
Tony's is probably the only halal pizza place between 249 and I-45. It's just average to be honest. I'll probably only eat it if it's catered. If you want the best halal pizza in Houston, then I suggest you go somewhere else.

CLOSED: U.B. Pizza & Mediterranean Pies: Halal Pizza and Pies in Fort Bend County

Restaurant: U.B.'s Pizza & Mediterranean Pies
Address: 1226 Museum Square Drive, Sugar Land, Texas 77479
Buffet or a-la-carte: A-la-carte
Date of visit: 1/23/16

UPDATE 3/29/18: UB's has closed down and is replaced by Fanoosh Biryani and Burgers

Background:
Salam/hey guys! Welcome to my third review of 2016. It will be of a place that has a mix of Italian and Arab food called U.B.'s Pizza & Mediterranean Pies. I heard about this place from Yelp. When I had read that all the meats were halal, I had made it a point to give this place a try. Recently, Blaze Pizza had opened up their 2nd Houston location in Sugar Land. It's another build-your-own pizza type of place. Ever since they opened up, I had always wanted to find a place where you could put as many toppings as you want and pay just one price. Alas, my prayers were answered when I saw on their website that there is a build-your-own-pizza. There was no price for that however. But no worries, the week after I saw that on their website, they were having their grand opening. I saw on many posts of them saying that the meat is halal. Convinced by what they were saying, I told my friend this and waited until the day of the visit to try the place. After meeting with him, we drove all the way to Sugar Land to give this place a try.

Let The Experience Begin!
U.B.'s is located at the intersection of Museum Square Dr. and New Territory Blvd. It is next to a Rita's Ice Custard store. Inside was very nice and there was music playing. We were one of the few people there, as it was just past 4 PM when we arrived there. Since it was their grand opening, we just said hello and proceeded to the cashier.

Let's Eat!
We confirmed again that everything was halal (including the pepperoni since it is beef) and we digged in. There were samples of what the restaurants were to offer on a normal day. I went up two times. The first plate consisted of the meat pie, Mama's tawouk sandwich, chicken shawarma, and kashkaval (Bulgarian cheese) pie. The second plate consisted of the Mediterranean cheese pie, the chicken shawarma again, the regular cheese pizza, and the Muhammara (Mediterranean hot sauce) pie. To drink, we got Coke. There was falafel available as well as baklava.

Menu: http://ubspizzaandpies.com/?page_id=122
Wow, these prices are really affordable! Nothing above $10 per their website! Even their build your own is at an amazing price! The best part, unlimited veggies! All that for only $7.49 + tax! I wish they would do that for their meats as well, but still nonetheless great! This is probably the closest you'll get to a halal Blaze Pizza. They also have the pies, which are different than the pizzas. The pies are made on manakeesh, which is a Lebanese flatbread. The shawarma is only sold from Thursdays to Sundays because apparently they are the most popular item.

Chicken shawarma, meat pie, Mama's tawouk sandwich, and Kashkaval pie

Mediterranean cheese pie, regular cheese pizza, Muhammara pie, and Chicken Shawamra

The Verdict:
Both me and my friend really enjoyed the food! Everything tasted amazing, especially the tawouk sandwich and the chicken shawarma. The tawouk sandwich was one of the best chicken sandwiches I have had in a really long time. The shawarma was insanely amazing! It definitely ranks as one of the top shawarmas I have had in Houston, and the best one I have had in Fort Bend county. Everything was fresh and had really high quality. I will say that the Muhammara pie is really hot. One bite and my mouth started burning.
The service was great. The people are really hospitable. They showed us what items were there when we were picking our things to try without any hesitation.

Conclusion:
U.B.'s is definitely a place that I would recommend you guys to try out! This is a great alternative They have really high quality food and they are really friendly. Most importantly, they are really affordable! I know I am definitely going to make more trips here in the future whenever I drive to Sugar Land from Cypress. And I already know what I plan on ordering when I come next time lol. If you don't want to spend a lot money getting deep dish pizza or even a regular pizza at D'Marcos, then you should come here! I would suggest that they fix their website at the part where it talk about their build-your-own pizza and include the prices on there.

Russo's New York Pizzeria- Another Halal Italian Place in Town!

Restaurant: Russo's New York Pizzeria
Address: 8236 Kirby Drive, Houston, Texas 77054
Buffet or a-la-carte: A-la-carte
Date of visit: 8/1/15

Background:
Salam/hey guys! Welcome to my latest review. Today I am reviewing a place that has halal options. Russo's New York Pizzeria. I first heard about this place from a friend of mine. His friend actually owns this place and that there are halal options in it as well. Russo's is a chain of restaurants that are over the US, with new locations opening up in the UAE. This is the only location in the US that has halal options. Pretty cool isn't it?! I got to try it before I had to attend a meeting for a competition that I was gonna take part of.

Let The Experience Begin!
Russo's is literally located next to NRG Stadium on Kirby Drive. It is located in the same strip mall as the Kirby Drive location of Dimassi's, a Subway, and a Fiesta Mart. Before reviewing this place, I thought of this place to be like other higher end restaurant chains like PF Chang's or Olive Garden. Instead, it was a really nice and casual place. It's like the New York Pizza Co. store next to AMC Willowbrook. In it was tables, the menu, and the I was helped to a table and was given the menu. I asked for the halal options, and they gave that to me as well.

Let's Eat!
I was originally planning on getting a Neapolitan pizza, but for one person, it was too much according to the people working. I then tried to get a Neapolitan pizza by the slice, but they didn't do that. So I ended up getting a medium pizza with halal beef pepperoni, halal beef sausage, and halal beef meatballs. Overall, I paid $20.95 (tax included). The waiting time was 17 minutes and 24 seconds. They also give free bread with olive oil. While waiting, I was eating that and watching Tom and Jerry.

Menu: https://nypizzeria.hungerrush.com/Order/Menu/25#Pasta

I had posted the online ordering link to the Pasta because they actually list the prices for the Kirby location. After clicking the link, click "Carryout" and then click "Continue as Guest". Now the thing is that on the actual website of the Russo's, many of the pastas use a Chianti-based meat sauce. Chianti is a wine from Tuscany, Italy. Now the thing is that one of the halal menu items is the spaghetti with halal beef meatballs. From the actual website, it says that it has the Chianti based meat sauce. I will update you on whether all the pastas at this location only use that sauce or whether you can actually substitute the sauce. The other halal pasta items are perfectly alright to order. Nevertheless it is nice to see another Italian place that has halal pasta and pizza items. A noted difference is that the chicken parmesan is not halal unlike Crespo. The pizzas are perfectly fine to order with the halal items. For any of the pizzas, even the Neapolitan ones, you can ask them to put the halal items in it. You can also ask them to not put the Prosciutto in the pizzas for the ones in the menu.

The Pizza

The Verdict:
Well, the pizza was pretty good after all. Everything was nice and fresh. The meats were really flavorful. Only issue was that it was greasy. It is nearly at the level of Crespo pizza. The food was washed down with some refreshing water. Good job Russo!
The service was also really good. Unlike Milano's, the people had the decency to actually provide a list of halal items available at the restaurant. The people were also really nice.

Conclusion:
Well, I could've ordered a large single slice, which was much cheaper. Nevertheless, I got the remaining pizza to go and gave some slices to my friends. I would definitely give this place another shot, and hope to try their Neapolitan pizza and other halal items. I'll ask them whether they use the Chianti meat sauce in the lasagna with halal meatballs.

CLOSED: Milano's Pizzeria & Italian Grill- It's OK to Ask Whether the Food is Zabiha or Not

Restaurant: Milano's Pizzeria & Italian Grill

Buffet or a-la-carte: A-la-carte
Date of visit: 5/1/14

UPDATE 12/25/15: According to Yelp, they're closed. Guess I don't have to worry about the person being rude about me asking him whether the food is halal or not lol

UPDATE 2/5/15
I called to update their halal status. They were really rude about it, so I just hung up the phone. Something is seriously fishy out there

Background:
Salam/hey guys! Sorry I am writing it now as I finally got my WiFi back. Today I will be reviewing Milano's Pizzeria & Italian Grill. It is a halal Italian restaurant that is in the strip mall that is located on Beltway 8 and West Road. I got to try this restaurant as I had a long time to wait to pick my sister up from her school. I would always take West Road while going to her school. Traffic was thankfully painless so after 15 minutes, I arrived at the restaurant.

Let The Experience Begin!
The restaurant reminded me of one of my favorite ones that closed down before I started this blog: Palio's Pizza that was located on Westheimer and Fountainview. I came in and the counter was right in front of me. After looking at the menu, I was ready to order.

Let's Eat!
Sadly they do not serve by the slice, so I couldn't order any pizza. I instead went for the Italian club, which consisted of smoked turkey, Canadian turkey bacon, beef pepperoni with creamy Italian dressing topped with mozzarella cheese, lettuce, and tomato on an Italian bread. I paid a total of $6.05 (tax included). The waiting time was 8 minutes and 42 seconds.

Menu: (click to see)

Appetizers, Soup & Salads, and Sandwiches

Specialty Pizzas and Pastas

Create Your Own Pizza, Drinks, Kids Zone, and Desserts

Italian Club Sandwich

The Verdict:
The food was very good, even though the meat was stuffed at the bottom of the vegetables. Thankfully the vegetables were fresh. Overall, two thumbs up.
The service, however, can improve. There was a huge halal sign that was at the counter, so I assumed that everything was halal (zabiha). However, I found out later on zabihah.com that 98% of the meat was halal. I asked him that everything was halal, and he got angry, repeatedly saying that there was no pork in the meat. If anyone knows the real truth, please comment below so that I can go back again knowing what to eat and what not to eat. I seriously think that restaurant owners should clearly state what is halal and what isn't. For example, Stanton City Bites always says to mention halal so that they can cook it separately on a separate grill. I remember seeing in a restaurant in Chicago (long before I started this blog) that the non-Zabiha items were clearly labeled. If the Muslim owners do not do that, then they will be answerable to Allah, NOT the consumer.

Conclusion:
Milano's impresses me, but they should clearly indicate what is halal or not. If they do, then I'll be back again.

Texas Pizza- Decent, but Could be better

Restaurant: Texas Pizza
1853 Richmond Avenue, Houston, Texas 77098
Buffet or a-la-carte: neither
Date of trying: 4/9/14

Background:
Salam/hey guys! Today I will be reviewing another pizza restaurant: Texas Pizza. They have two locations. One on Addicks Clodine Rd, and one on Richmond Ave. This once reviews the Richmond location. Now this is not your normal review. For the first time ever, I am reviewing catering. This may also be my only catering review. Sheikh Waleed Basyouni, a speaker here in Houston, was giving a lecture at UH. Now I normally do not do catering reviews because the quality of catering is usually different than the quality of the food served in the restaurant. This is one exception because this restaurant does not serve pizza by the slice, unlike Crespo. And the smallest pizza, the 8 inch one, is too big for me. I know there are sandwiches available at the restaurant, but since it is a pizza place, the emphasis is usually on the pizza. So before the lecture started, I grabbed a bite.

Let The Experience Begin!
Well I didn't go to the restaurant, so there is nothing about the place. If I go to the actual place, then I can comment on what the restaurant was like.

Let's Eat!
So the options today were chicken pizza and beef pizza. There was also cheese pizza for those who wanted it. To drink, I just drank water.

Menu: http://houston.eat24hours.com/texas-pizza/2007
Original location: http://houston.eat24hours.com/texas-pizza/7941
Now here is something I don't get. If the original location can serve halal beef pepperoni and halal turkey ham, then why can't the Richmond location have it? People would normally expect the restaurant to have the same options as the flagship location has.

Beef Pizza on the left and Chicken Pizza on the right

The Verdict:
The pizza was good, but not as good as Crespo. It was definitely hot, but not as flavorful as Crespo. The crust was a bit hard also. Overall, one thumb up.
There is nothing to do with service as the person delivered the pizza then left off.

Conclusion:
To conclude what has been the shortest review yet, Texas Pizza is a good place to go if you want a specific size. They come in 10 inches, 12 inches, 14 inches, 16 inches, and 18 inches, unlike Crespo that has only 12 inches or 16 inches. Also, here is cheaper than Crespo. But if you want the best tasting pizza in Houston, then I would suggest you pay those extra bucks for Crespo.

Grading: Since there is no service, it will be omitted in the grading
