Family Kitchen- Halal Mexican in a Gas Station

Restaurant: Family Kitchen
Address: 11836 Texas 6 South, Sugar Land, Texas
Buffet or a-la-carte: a-la-carte
Date of visit: 7/14/15

Background:
Salam/hey guys! I hope you guys had a wonderful Ramadan and Eid! I have barely been able to try new places out because I had been busy with Ramadan and my internship. Anyways, today's review is of a place called Family Kitchen. Don't let the name fool you. This is the actual name of the restaurant. I had heard about this place on Facebook, and when I heard it had halal Mexican food, I made it a point to try it out. I had been in Dallas, but after coming back, it was hard to go somewhere because I would go to the mosque or my house for iftar. Since Ramadan was coming to an end, I wanted to actually try and go somewhere new. So I chose this as it was near my work and the highway that would take me to the mosque. After going through traffic, I arrived at the place.

Let The Experience Begin!
Family Kitchen is located inside the Chevron Gas Station at the intersection of Highway 6 and Voss next to Cafe Yasmeen and Dar-Ul-Uloom mosque. Right next to the entrance were alcohol and gambling machines (I am not sure whether they're actually allowed in Texas). There were chairs and tables in front of the place where you order. I waited for a bit for the lady to come and was ready to order.

Let's Eat!
I ordered the small beef burrito. I needed to eat something that was small so that I can pray and then drive over to my mosque for the night prayers. I also got a diet Pepsi. I paid a total of roughly $6. The waiting time was a good 3 minutes, perfect as I literally had to go, stop somewhere, pray, then go to my mosque.

Menu:
The menu consists of both India/Pakistani food and "Spanish" food. They should seriously change the name from "Spanish dishes" to "Mexican dishes" because Spanish and Mexican dishes are two completely different things!! Heck, the taco came about long before the Spanish arrived in Latin America. Anyways, the Indo-Pak dishes are literally the same things you get at other Indian/Pakistani places, while the Mexican items are the exact same as the ones in TG's a few miles down on Highway 6 and Kensington. I read on their Yelp page that a pic of the menu from 2012 had a lot more Mexican items than it did today. It had stuff like flautas, tostadas, chile rellenos, and even pozole. To try halal versions of these things have to wait as of right now because this place no longer offers them (If they do, I will update), while the vast majority of the Indian/Pakistani items are still there. The only good part is that everything is under $10.

Menu

Small Beef Burrito

The Verdict:
The burrito was good, but not the best of burritos I have had. Their sauces were ok. For a small size burrito, it was pretty big. I can only wonder how the large burrito looks like. Food was washed down with water and a Diet Pepsi. Overall, one side thumb.
Service was nothing to write about. Just got the food and headed out.

Conclusion:
Family Kitchen is a good place to get nice, cheap halal Mexican food in the Southwest side of town. They have the essential Mexican things such as burritos, tacos, enchiladas, and fajitas. They also have Indian/Pakistani items. It does taste good, but for the best halal burrito, I would suggest going somewhere else.
